7 Days Great Lakes and Maasai Mara Birding Adventure
Lake Bogoria is not often visited by tourists and yet it has stunning scenery. Bogoria is a soda lake hence does not have any outlet. Intense evaporation has led to high levels of salt and minerals. Beautiful and captivating hot springs and baths provide a natural spa for visitors in as much as they are dangerous. The lake has an absence of fish due to high salt levels but its waters contain the blue-green algae which tend to attract thousands of flamingos seasonally and turn the shores pink. Bushy grasslands surround the lake and visitors can spot a variety of animals here including the buffalo, zebra, impala, greater kudu, leopard, gazelle, caracals, klipspringers and dik dik.
Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi – Lake Bogoria
Meet and greet at your residence within Nairobi by Marascarface Travelers Courtesy Team in the morning at 8.00am. After receiving a short introduction and briefing, you will depart to Lake Bogoria, which is a bird lover’s paradise. Bogoria is home to flamingos, bubbling hot springs and steaming geysers which emit hot vapor from the core of the earth. You may buy some eggs to boil in the hot springs as a demonstration of how hot the springs can be! Have lunch at the lodge and spend the rest of the afternoon at the shores of the lake.
Day 2: Lake Bogoria – Lake Baringo
Spend the morning at the shores of the lake enjoying the cool morning breeze as you spot birds such as the Steppe Eagles, Fish Eagles and Tawny Eagles which are present in amazing numbers. Massive flocks of Lesser Flamingos and Greater Flamingos also dot the water making it have a pinkish appearance. Afterwards, check out of the lodge and be driven to the nearby Lake Baringo for more birding excursions. You will check in for lunch on arrival then spend the rest of the day enjoying bird walks, nature walks and the breath taking scenery. If lucky, you may spot the Vereaux’s Eagle, which loves to prey on the dominant rock hyrax found in this park. Other types of birds which are most likely to be seen due to their large numbers include the Pale and dark phase Gabar Goshawk, Paradise Flycatcher, African Fish Eagles, Marabou Storks, Shikra and White-faced Scops Owl. Spend the night in your lodge which is located at the shores of the lake facing the seven islands and Laikipia escarpment in the most spectacular scenery.
Day 3: Lake Baringo – Lake Nakuru National Park
Enjoy an early morning bird walk along the shores of the lake before check out and departure to Lake Nakuru National Park for bird watching, game viewing and a brisk walk at the shores of the lake. Upon arrival at Lake Nakuru, check in for lunch before departing for an afternoon game drive. Also visit the spectacular lion hill cliff and baboon cliff for an aerial view of the park and a photograph. Some of the birds found in Lake Nakuru include the flamingo (although they have reduced in numbers lately); the waders such as the avocet, pelican, white stork, ibis, ducks, cormorant, herons and terns. The shoreline is also lined with various plains game such as buffalo, rhino, Thompson’s gazelle, zebra and others.
Day 4: Lake Nakuru National Park – Lake Naivasha
Enjoy an early morning pre breakfast game drive within the beautiful park viewing wildlife such as lions, leopards, zebra, gazelles, eland, giraffe and the hyrax. Your lodge is very strategically located overlooking the grassy plains and therefore giving you a good opportunity to spot a hunt going on. The Lodge incorporates natural landscaping with tall acacia trees, winding walkways and greens dotted with bird feeds. The Lodge is a natural haven for bird life and attracts over 50 species of birds amongst the 400 species that inhabit the Park. Afterwards, depart from the park and be driven to Lake Naivasha. Lake Naivasha is a fresh water lake without a known outlet. This is very strange considering that the rivers that feed it are salty. Some birds which are most likely to be seen here include the fish eagle, Wattled Starling, Shalow’s Wheatear, Purple Grenadier, Black-lorded Babbler, White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher, Crimson-rumped Waxbill, African Citril, Grey-headed Bush-shrike, White-browed Robin-chat, Red-fronted Barbet and Red-cheeked Cordonbleu.
Day 5: Lake Naivasha – Maasai Mara
After breakfast, you will check out of your rooms and be driven to Mara Reserve. You will arrive in the Mara for check in and lunch before proceeding for an afternoon game drive till evening. Maasai Mara is home to the big five and numerous bird species and plains game. Due to the abundance of game, 6 out of the 7 species of Kenyan vulture (Egyptian, Hooded, Griffon, Nubian, White-backed and White-headed) can be seen in the game reserve, with only the Lammergeyer missing.
Day 6: Maasai MaraSpend the day along the winding banks of the Talek River Ecosystem which is teeming with bird-life, hippo and crocodile, in the heart of Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. But it isn’t just carrion eaters that can be found in Maasai Mara, the bird list totals to over 450 species. These range from the large and highly conspicuous Common Ostrich, to the small Cardinal Quelea. The Mara is also home to three relatively uncommon Woodpeckers (Golden-tailed, Little Spotted and Fine-banded). If you get really lucky then the Mara River provides an opportunity to spot the rare and elusive African Fin foot. The Mara is also one of the most likely spots for the Blue Quail, a rare intra African migrant.
Day 7: Maasai Mara – Nairobi
Depart for an early morning pre breakfast game drive which gives you a chance to spot the early predators as they start off the day. After breakfast you will depart from the park and be driven back to Nairobi stopping for lunch en route. Upon arrival in Nairobi you will be transferred to your preferred destination within the city.
